Driving in and around New York
JFK Airport is located in Queens, around 19km south-east of Lower Manhattan. The JFK Expressway connects the airport with the Belt Parkway, which provides access to Brooklyn and Queens. You can also follow this route to Staten Island, or join Interstate 278 (I-278) towards Newark.
The airport lies at the starting point of I-678. This then leads north through Queens and across the East River. You can stay on this road if you want to reach the Bruckner Interchange located in the Bronx. From here you can join the Hutchinson River Parkway, which runs towards the border with Connecticut. I-678 also provides a connection to Grand Central Parkway, which runs to Long Island.
With car hire at JFK Airport you’ll also be well-placed to visit destinations such as Philadelphia, 170km south of the airport via I-95, or Bostonwhich is 350km away along I-90. The capital of New York state, Albany, is 260km north of the airport along the Taconic State Parkway.
Manhattan is the busiest area of New York, particularly at peak travel times, so if you’re planning to drive around this part of the city, it’s worth planning your route in advance and allowing plenty of time for your journey. You will find plenty of parking garages around the city – there are many restrictions around on-street parking, even on streets with meters, so pay close attention to the signs.
Unlike many other parts of the US, in New York you cannot make a right turn on red, unless there is a sign indicating you may do so. You may also notice avenues where you’re not allowed to make a left turn during certain hours – this is designed to limit congestion. These should always be clearly signposted.
The speed limit in New York City is significantly lower than most other parts of the US. Throughout the city, unless otherwise stated, the speed limit you should follow is 25 mph (40 km/h).
