The Atlanta Journal WEEKEND 1 The Atlanta Constitution 15-A deaths a Ruth Tucker Herbert, Georgia writer, teacher By Billie Cheney Speed Staff Writer The funeral for Mrs. Ruth Tucker Herbert, a writer and teacher who influenced many Georgia writers, will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill. Burial will be Monday at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Ala.
Mrs. Herbert, the widow of Dr. Oliver Herbert, a well-known organist in Atlanta, died Friday of cancer. She had been on board of directors of the Dixie Council of Authors and Journalists, and for the past 23 years she had taught fiction at the annual workshop, which is held at St. Simon's Island.
In 1981, the Dixie Council honored her with a special award in recognition of her dedication to literary art. She taught in the noncredit enrichment program at Emory University for 20 years, and also taught creative writing classes at DeKalb College, Oglethorpe University and Dalton Junior College. Mary Cobb Bugg, director of community educational services at Emory University, said Mrs. Herbert had "a remarkable influence on a number of writers in Atlanta and her reputation was so fantastic that people would commute to Emory from as far away as Savannah or Tennessee to study with her." Mrs. Frances Patton Statham, author of the bestselling novel, "Phoenix Rising," said, "She was a mentor to many of us.
She influenced an entire generation of Georgia writers and others throughout the South." After graduation from Birmingham Southern College in 1927, she moved to New York and went to John Holton, owned food services firm The funeral for John R. Holton, 30, of Overland Park, formerly of Atlanta, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oglethorpe Hill, with burial at Arlington Memorial Park. Mr. Holton, owner of Holton Food Services Inc.
in Overland Park, died Wednesday. He had owned the company, which operates the Merriam, franchise of the International House of Pancakes, since 1976. Mr. Holton was a member of the advisory council of the restaurant chain and had won several awards from the chain for high standards and achieve- ment. He had been a resident of Overland Park since 1975.
Mr. Holton was the son of the late James R. Holton, a Fayetteville native who was killed Dec. 28 in a plane crash off the Georgia coast near Savannah. Surviving daughter, Miss Erica Leah Holton of Overland Park; mother and stepfather, Mr.
and Mrs. James E. Leben of Duluth; sister, Mrs. Joyce Garrett of Overland Park; brother, Jeffrey R. Holton of Overland Park; grandmother, Mrs.

Connely, Baptist pastor The funeral for the Rev. R.E. Connely 91, of 0 Atlanta will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill, with burial in Arlington Memorial Park. The Rev.
Mr. Connely, a retired Baptist minister who last served as pastor of Chapel by the Sea Baptist Church in Savannah Beach, died Friday. A native of Shelbina, Mr. Connely was a veteran of World War II, serving as a U.S. Army combat chaplain.
He was a 32nd-degree Mason. Mr. Connely was a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, and the Harvard School of Chaplains. When he was in his 80s, Mr. Connely came out of retirement to accept the pastorship of Chapel by the Sea Baptist Church.
He was a former pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Tabb, Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in Decatur, Prince Avenue Baptist Church in Athens, and the Petee Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph, Mo. In the 1930s, Mr. Connely hosted a radio Bible show known as "Betty and Uncle Bob" in La Crosse, Wis. Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Tippa Connely; daughter, Mrs. H. Frank Smith of Atlanta; and son, Dr. R.E. Connely Jr.

S.P. Aldridge, headed DeKalb Medical Society The funeral for Dr. Stanley Preston Aldridge, 61, of Atlanta will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at A.S. Turner Sons Chapel, with burial at Arlington Memorial Park.
Dr. Aldridge, a physician specializing in internal medicine, died Thursday. Past president of the DeKalb Medical Society, Dr. Aldridge also served on the DeKalb County Board of Health. He was a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the Georgia Society of Internal Medicine and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.
A 1949 graduate Southern College of Pharmacy, Dr. Aldridge received his medical degree in 1960 from the Medical College of Georgia. He did a three-year residency in internal medicine at Georgia Baptist Hospital and entered private practice in Decatur in 1964. Dr. Aldridge was a member of the Cathedral of St.
Philip. A native of Sycamore, he was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are wife, Mrs. Gee Aldridge; daughters, Mrs. Sandye Patterson of Lilburn and Miss Marcia Aldridge of Atlanta; and brothers, John Aldridge of Americus and Cecil Aldridge of Chattanooga, Tenn.
