Can Miss USA contestants be married? ›

Over the years, the Miss USA Pageant has evolved to reflect the changing attitudes towards beauty and femininity. Contestants are now judged on their intellect, charisma, and overall presence, in addition to their physical appearance.

Miss USA & Teen USA Eligibility

Miss USA contestants must be between the ages of 18 and 27 before January 1^st of the year the national pageant takes place and Miss Teen USA contesants must be between the ages of 14 and 18 before January 1^st of the year the national pageant takes place.

The winner will claim the Miss USA crown and win the right to $50,000 in scholarship rights whilst they will also earn the ability to travel across the United States on a salary which could reach six figures as well as expenses too.

One notable rule is that contestants cannot be married, while divorced individuals are eligible to compete. Tattoos are allowed, but they must be covered if visible.

Instituted under the directorship of Lenora Slaughter, rule number seven stated that "contestants must be of good health and of the white race." As late as 1940, all contestants were required to list, on their formal biological data sheet, how far back they could trace their ancestry.

The most significant differences lies in their competition formats. Miss America eliminated its swimsuit portion in 2018, focusing instead on interviews and a talent showcase. Miss USA, however, retains the swimsuit competition and does not include a talent portion. The age requirements also differ slightly.

Texas with 10 Miss USA winners

The state which has seen the most Miss USAs crowned is Texas with 10 winners between 1977 and 2022. They are followed by California with six, Hawaii with five and four states all with four winners: Illinois, North Carolina, New York and District of Columbia.

Miss Nebraska Teresa Scanlan was named Miss America, becoming the youngest winner since 1933. The 17-year-old recent high school graduate is also the first Miss Nebraska to win the title.

Starting with the 2023 edition of the pageant, the Miss Universe Organization announced in August 2022 that it would accept divorced, maritally annulled, married, or widowed women and mothers to compete in the pageant.

Onstage, there are differences as well. Miss America has a talent portion, while Miss USA does not.

Miss America 1949, Jacque Mercer, was married and divorced during her reign; after this, a rule was enacted requiring Miss America contestants to sign a certification that they have never been married or pregnant.
